Muti, Man of the Moment

Yesterday’s news couldn’t have been better, as far as I’m concerned. But knowing how things go, the next milestone to look out for is the first time one of the detractors of our former music director refers to his tenure here as ‘the good old days’.

You are so lucky.

Oh, I presumed that milestone ("the good old days") had already happened.

? wha ?

The milestone is the flip-flop, the moment when those for whom dissatisfaction constitutes a way of life realize the object of their disaffection has receded too far into the past and seek to replace it with something more immediate.

A friend of ours, a retiree from the St. Louis Symphony, said that when Muti was just getting his start, they used to refer to him as Ritard-o Muti, because he took everything so slowly.

I doubt I will EVER look back on the 15-year tenure of our previous Music Director as "the good-old days". In my mind, that'd be kinda like DSCH rememebring Stalin as a kindly ol' grampa.
