I very much enjoyed last night's concert! Surprised to see empty seats, but I assumed it was "a Thursday thing". What amazes me are those leave in mid-movement (from mid-row, of course), or hightail it for the doors barely as the first bows are being taken. It's obviously visible (and disappointing) to the musicians, judging by their expressions. What's a few more minutes to show proper appreciation for beautiful music and hard work? I stay put in (or standing in front of) my aisle seat till the applause is truly over...
Aw, you didn't include the CBE rehearsal on Sunday night on your schedule...

The Thursday Tchaikovsky / Scriabin had empty seats as well. I've noticed the same at the Opera, a film series I attend and at a dance concert at the Harris Theater - which was sold out last year. Perhaps it is more an economic indicator than a comment on the performances, programming, quality etc..
The performance on Saturday was truly phenomenal. I haven't seen that amount of control over the orchestra since Solti conducted Shostakovich 15 in the mid 1990s. The orchestra sounds excellent; I don't what happened between Saturday and the last time I went to a concert (it's been more than 5 years), but that effort is truly appreciated. (basses: nice job on those smooth octave jumps in the last movement! it was very mysterious!)
As for the audience, my partner and I snuck down to the lower balcony at the intermission from the gallery. I'm not sure why there were so many empty seats. The pairing of works was a bit of a stretch, so perhaps that might have been the issue?
Yes, Saturday performance was phenomenal. Outstanding job by everyone. Loved the Wagner as well. (The Wagner would make a great candidate for a future "Soloists from the Orchestra" release if it was taped, BTW.)
I too find the early departures disturbing and disrespectful, but it may have to do with the length of commutes these days. I once "upgraded" from standing room to a seat in Götterdämmerung at the Met because somebody had to run to catch a train to Connecticut. At the CSO what's a real killer is the parking garage valets at the underground lot. You can't get out of the bottom floor until the top floor has emptied out completely. The valets won't let you. I have wasted over 30 minutes there once. My wife and I usually beat the rush by staying on for a drink and a snack at Rhapsody or somewhere else nearby. But someone really should rein in those idiots at the garage. It's a similar problem at Ravinia.
i caught the saturday performance, as well, and i enjoyed it very much. it's been a while since i've heard the CSO; i'd forgotten how good it can be! i liked seeing so many engaged faces on stage, too. and the sledgehammer.
